Who wouldn’t enjoy gorgeous weather in December?
I didn’t think it would be warm enough in December for the bees to leave the hives. They don’t fly much when it’s colder than 50F. They took full advantage of the warm sunny day to clean out their hives.
Preparing the hives for winter, I gave them both bottom and top openings so there is adequate ventilation in each hive. Moisture build up is a common problem in beehives, like ice damming in colder climates.
For most of the winter they’re confined to the hive, and then they have a big spring cleaning when it warms up again. The warm spell gave them a chance to get out and stretch their wings.
